Situated in the heart of downtown Montreal, and in the center of “The Golden Square Mile”, once the wealthiest neighborhood of Canada, The Dominion Square Tavern derives its name from the historic park situated across the street, which celebrates the Dominion Of Canada.

In 1927, at the peak of the Roaring Twenties, The Dominion Square Tavern opened its doors. Its first incarnation was as a Hotel Restaurant. The Tavern survived the Great Depression, and some years thereafter a fire destroyed the adjacent building, which sheltered the biggest part of the hotel, leaving behind only the restaurant and some rooms above.

In the 70's, the storied location evolves to become one of the city’s first gay bars. Patrons entered discreetly by the back alleyway where one can still see the original sign hanging on the brick wall. The establishment remained off limits to women until 1988 when a new law revoked the exclusive access to taverns across Quebec.

Située en plein coeur du « Golden Square Mile », quartier jadis le plus riche du Canada, la Taverne Square Dominion porte le nom du parc qui lui fait face, en référence au Dominion du Canada. Elle ouvre ses portes comme hôtel-restaurant en 1927 dans l'effervescence des années folles alors que l'économie tourne à plein régime. La Taverne Square Dominion subsiste à la Grande Dépression mais quelques années plus tard, un incendie réduit en cendre la partie adjacente de l'édifice, laquelle abritait le plus grand nombre de chambres. Le brasier ne laissa intact que le restaurant ainsi que quelques chambres au-dessus.

Dans les années 70, l'établissement change de vocation et devient l’un des premiers bars gay de la métropole. On y entrait alors en toute discrétion par la porte arrière, comme l’indique toujours l’enseigne à l’entrée de la ruelle. L’établissement demeure réservé aux hommes jusqu’en 1988 alors qu’une nouvelle loi révoque l’accès exclusif des tavernes à travers le Québec.

En 2009, la Taverne Square Dominion reprend ses airs de restaurant, proposant une cuisine bistro à saveur canadienne française conviviale, relevée d’une touche britannique réconfortante. On y a préservé certains éléments authentiques qui, à travers les années, ont forgé le caractère de l’établissement tels que les chandeliers, les planchers de terrazzo coloré et les murs de céramique en haut desquels sont affichés les blasons à l’effigie des provinces du Dominion du Canada.

Elle garde aujourd’hui le nom de "Taverne" à titre historique seulement.

À travers le temps, la Taverne Square Dominion a su conserver l’esprit des lieux d’origine, se réinventant maintes fois au gré des changements sociaux et politiques sans jamais cependant sacrifier son patrimoine authentique.
In 2009, The Dominion Square Tavern returned to its roots becoming a restaurant once more. Offering bistro-style dishes with an accessible French Canadian palate, the Tavern’s cuisine is also notably infused with a British sensibility.

The dining room has maintained many genuine elements that forged the character of the establishment throughout the years – the original chandelier, the colored terrazzo floors, and the ceramic walls that are covered with the coats of arms of the provinces of the Dominion of Canada.

Today the use of the term ‘tavern’ is kept only as an historical reminder. Throughout the years, The Dominion Square Tavern has preserved its original ambiance, reinventing itself many times during periods of social and political change without ever sacrificing its authentic heritage.
