Becoming a doctor in India often requires either a High Merit ranking or financial means. Globally, numerous students venture to various destinations to pursue their aspirations and professional careers. This migration typically sees individuals moving from eastern regions to the western part of the world, attracted by superior university infrastructure, global exposure, and the availability of specialized fields and career prospects. Specifically focusing on the medical field, the reasons for migration from India to other countries differ significantly from those of English-speaking nations and Europe.
Securing an MBBS seat in any of India's Government colleges is widely regarded as one of the most challenging tasks globally. This challenge primarily stems from the stringent infrastructure requirements and the availability of qualified faculty in medical colleges. To address this issue, the government has introduced numerous reforms in the medical education sector. These include relaxing norms for opening new medical colleges and academic criteria for faculty members, all aimed at increasing the availability of MBBS seats. However, despite these efforts, securing an MBBS seat remains a dream for many aspiring medical students.
Government reports, published across various platforms over time, reveal that more than 40% of non-clinical and 65% of clinical faculty positions in recently established medical colleges (within the last five years) remain unfilled. This scarcity severely impacts the learning experience of medical students. As a result, the prospects of obtaining an MBBS seat grow slimmer each passing year for medical aspirants. In the year 2023, approximately 18,000 Indian students are currently enrolled in medical universities globally, constituting over one-third of the students in private medical colleges in India.
