Bantawmeight champion T.J. Dillashaw (11-2 MMA, 7-2 UFC) suffered a fractured rib while training and is out of his UFC 186 main event rematch with former champ Renan Barao (33-2 MMA, 8-1 UFC) next month.
UFC officials confirmed the news today following an initial report from The Star Phoenix. According to the report, it is not yet known if Barao will remain on the card against a new opponent, or if he will wait for Dillashaw to heal for a rescheduled title fight.
The loss of that fight will catapult the event’s second title bout into headlining status, it would appear, meaning flyweight champ Demetrious Johnson will top the card against Kyoji Horiguchi – though UFC officials have not yet made that official.
UFC 186 takes place April 25 at Bell Centre in Montreal. The main card airs on pay-per-view following prelims on FOX Sports 1 and UFC Fight Pass.
The delay in the Dillashaw-Barao rematch is the second time the fight has had to be postponed. Dillashaw ended Barao’s 32-fight unbeaten streak to capture the title at UFC 173 this past May in a shocking upset, and a dominant one, at that. A rematch was first booked for UFC 177 this past August, but the fight fell apart on weigh-in day when Barao suffered an injury while cutting weight.
Dillashaw remained on the card and successfully defended his title against last-minute replacement Joe Soto. He was expected to fight former champion Dominick Cruz in a highly anticipated bout later this year, but “The Dominator” suffered an unfortunate knee injury that’s likely to sideline for the majority of 2015.
