The bumpy road to good intentions.
Hilarious and irreverent.

A New Age single mother takes in a boarder, a lost boy of Sudan, just as her adult daughter returns home to cocoon after a failed marriage. Her other daughter, a teenager, decides to chronicle the recent immigrant's story as a class project and in the course of learning about his incredible ordeal, develops a schoolgirl crush. Cultural differences and thwarted expectations make this a charming and stingingly truthful story of four people trying to do the right thing.
Social Studies is a new work by Canadian playwright Tricia Cooper called Social Studies, which premièred at Prairie Theatre Exchange in Winnipeg last fall. In this play, which offers a unique perspective on diversity, a woman returns home to find that her mother has taken a Sudanese refugee under her wing. “It kind of deals with all the cultural differences and good intentions of this family that really wants to try to help but they’re not quite sure what to do,” Surette said. “The woman who wrote it has a sketch comedy background, so there’s always humour in it. But she goes for some of the thorny issues of integration in a really smart and thorough way.”
