National Exit Test (NEXT) Overview
The inception of the National Exit Test (NEXT) embodies a universally embraced principle – an unwavering commitment to maintaining quality standards within the medical profession.

It became increasingly apparent that corruption had permeated the 88-year-old Medical Council of India (MCI). There was substantial evidence suggesting that officials were engaging in illicit activities, forming alliances with political figures at various levels. Additionally, discrepancies were observed in the process of inducting new members into the medical fraternity. Notably, while foreign medical graduates were required to undergo the MCI Screening Test, doctors graduating from Indian Medical Universities were exempt.

Furthermore, it was recognized that the quality of medical education varied significantly worldwide. Notable disparities were observed between the standards of education in government and private institutions, as highlighted by various surveys. Moreover, there existed a notable absence of quality checks to assess a significant portion of the medical workforce entering the Indian healthcare sector.

Following extensive deliberation by the Government of India (GOI), the National Medical Commission Bill was enacted on September 25, 2020. This legislation led to the dissolution of the MCI, replaced by the establishment of the National Medical Commission (NMC). A pivotal decision made by the NMC was the replacement of the MCI Screening Test with the National Exit Test (NEXT).
